The Internet is a groundbreaking source of information the scope of which was once believed impossible, adding incredible databases, social networking abilities and the chance to learn about the world at the push of a button. Sometimes, however, using the Internet too much, or having an Internet addiction, can cause lasting problems in relationships, job opportunities or schoolwork.

Definition

Internet addiction is generally considered to occur when Internet life has overtaken the offline life of the user. According to Andy Oliver at the University of Florida, studies have been conducted that consider Internet addictive behaviors to be just as damaging as other, better known, addictive behaviors such as gambling and drug addiction.

Signs and Symptoms

The American Psychiatric Association requires that for a medical diagnosis of Internet addiction to be made, certain criteria must be met. A person must have three or more of the typical symptoms of addiction: tolerance to the Internet, withdrawal symptoms when online access is limited, use of Internet is used to release anxiety associated with Internet withdrawal, online activities go on much longer than originally intended, much of your time is spent doing Internet-based activities that relate to the Internet, such as researching web browsers, social activities are given up due to Internet use, and Internet use is risking the loss of a relationship or job. Other symptoms may include isolation from family or friends and feeling guilty about the amount of time or how often you use the Internet.

Cyber Sex and Porn

The number of people engaged in sexual activities on the Internet, including looking at pornography, has skyrocketed in recent years. The anonymity associated with the Internet, in conjunction with the privacy of conducting sexual acts in your own home, can seem tempting. Sexual Internet surfing becomes a type of sexual addiction that can ultimately erode relationships, families, careers and even have legal ramifications. According to health website the Help Guide, sexual addictions can occur if you are engaging in sexual activities that cause severe problems with your daily life, yet you still continue even if your activities clash with your moral values.

Children and Teens

According to the New York Times, Internet addiction is more likely to occur in children and teens who have attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), a social phobia, depression or who are hostile. Fast-paced video games and social networking websites draw these types of children in. Those with social phobias and depression, as well as people with anger issues, may use the Internet for a type of social therapy, something that allows them to put on a new identity or avoid social interactions that make them feel inadequate.

Help for Addiction

Despite the level of your Internet addiction, you can help yourself move away from your damaging habits. First, recognize the life you are missing, whether that involves social events or simply watching TV. Keep a physical log of your online time and look it over to see the extent to which the Internet has infiltrated your life. Manage your time effectively and learn strategies to keep you off the Internet. One example is deciding to complete a task and finding a concrete time and place to be without your computer. Find support from real friends and family and spend time with them. They can also help you find other social activities with which to get involved. Still, psychiatric and professional help is also available to help you recover your life.
