Reflexology is an alternative medical practice that has been used for centuries. Archaeological evidence from Japan, Egypt and China indicate reflexology practices in ancient civilizations. Reflexology is the practice of applying pressure on certain zones of the feet to induce health. It is believed that there are areas on the foot that correspond to other areas of the body. By applying pressure to specific zones of the feet, health and healing can occur to the corresponding body areas.

How To Get Results From Reflexology

According to Reflexology-Research.com, reflexology must be performed consistently to gain the most benefit with morning, noon and night sessions. The sessions should be daily, and most reflexology sessions last for 30 minutes to an hour. These daily sessions will increase blood flow, help to reduce pain and will create a sense of relaxation. If it is not possible to have three reflexology sessions per day, it is best to have at least one session per day than none at all. Consistency is the key with reflexology.

Research on Reflexology

There has been much research conducted on reflexology. In a study conducted in Bangkok on the effect of foot reflexology on pain and fatigue of AIDS/HIV patients, it was found that foot reflexology was reducing pain to some degree, though not significantly. Foot reflexology in the study also indicated a reduction in blood pressure. In another study conducted in China, results indicated that foot reflexology sessions helped to reduce frequent urinary problems in women. A study in England on irritable bowel symptoms and foot reflexology indicated there was no evidence that reflexology helped with the symptoms.

Relaxation and Reflexology

One of the primary benefits of foot reflexology is relaxation. The human touch in reflexology creates a sense of calm and relaxation. The messaging and application of pressure to the feet help to reduce stress and create a feeling of relaxation. There are foot reflexology gardens and paths in many countries. The paths have stones of varying heights which apply pressure to different areas of the foot as the person walks. The gardens are well landscaped and provide a relaxing walk. The benefits of reflexology are many but the stress reducing and calming effect makes the process especially beneficial.
