Lamictal is a medication in a classification of drugs known as anticonvulsants. According to Drugs.com, Lamictal is used alone or in combination with other medications to treat seizures in adults and children who are at least 2-years old, and to delay mood episodes in adults with bipolar disorder. There are dangerous side effects associated with Lamictal of which patients should be aware.

Alteration in Mood and Behavior

Patients taking Lamictal may experience a dangerous alteration in mood and behavior. This can lead to the development of suicidal thoughts. Patients should be closely monitored during the first several months of treatment. Those who experience mood or behavior changes, depression, anxiety or feelings of agitation, hostility, restlessness, hyperactivity, or have thoughts of suicide or hurting oneself should contact a doctor right away, reports Drugs.com. Family members and caregivers should also be informed of these side effects in order to help monitor patients taking this medication.

Skin Rash

Patients may develop a dangerous life-threatening skin rash while taking Lamictal.This side effect may be more common in patients who are allergic to other seizure medications or take Lamictal in conjunction with other medications. Patients should tell their physician what other medications they are currently taking prior to starting treatment with Lamictal. According to Drugs.com, users should seek emergency medical attention if they develop a fever, sore throat, swollen glands, and headache with a severe blistering, peeling and red skin rash, prior to taking another dose of Lamictal.

Hypersensitivity Reaction

A dangerous side effect of Lamictal is the development of a hypersensitivity reaction. According to Drugs.com, patients who develop hives, fever, swollen glands, painful sores in or around the eyes or mouth, difficulty breathing, or swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat should seek immediate medical attention.

Edema

Edema, or swelling, may be a symptom of a dangerous reaction to Lamictal, according to Medline Plus. Those taking Lamictal who experience swelling of the hands, feet, lower legs or ankles should contact their physician.

Increase in Seizure Activity

Lamictal may cause a worsening of seizure activity. Patients taking Lamictal should report any increase in seizure activity to their doctor. Users should not abruptly discontinue their use of Lamictal if seizures occur. Abrupt discontinuation may lead to a worsening of seizures, which may be dangerous.
