Pimples, or acne vulgaris, are a common skin condition that 85 percent of teenagers experience, according to the American Academy of Dermatology. Teenagers and adults suffer with breakouts and scarring from acne. The exact cause of acne is not known, and it is not curable. Numerous products and treatments available treat mild blemishes and larger acne breakouts.
Retinol Creams
Retinol products are made from vitamin A. Natural retinoids come in cream, liquid and gel forms. They work by unclogging pores and keeping them clear. They cause the skin to flake and peel, thereby unclogging the pores. Retinol creams are only available by prescription. Products such as benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid and dandruff shampoos contain sulfur, do not react well with retinoids, and should not be used while being treated.
Synthetic topical retinoids work the same as natural retinoids. Both keep the pores clear and are proven effective in treating acne. Pregnant women are advised not to use synthetic retinoid. It has caused birth defects in animals, according to the American Academy of Dermatology.
Topical retinoids cause sun sensitivity. Always wear a broad spectrum (protects against both UVA and UVB) sunblock of SPF 30 or higher. Exposure to the sun should be limited along with extreme wind and harsh weather to avoid skin irritation.
Antibiotics
For moderate to severe cases of acne, antibiotics are one of the top acne solutions. When other topical treatments fail, antibiotics may be prescribed. They are also sometimes combined with other treatments, including topical creams.
Erythromycin
Erythromycin is another antibiotic, but it is applied topically. It kills a broad range of bacteria and is only available by prescription. It is sometimes used with benzoyl peroxide, which is a proven effective treatment for blemishes and acne. The combination of products can cause excessive skin dryness.
Salicylic Acid
An over-the-counter remedy for blemishes and acne, salicylic acid is one of the top acne solution products purchased without a prescription. It works by slowing the skin cell turnover and preventing the pores from clogging. Salicylic acid may break down whiteheads and blackheads and can cause stinging and minor skin irritation.
Benzoyl Peroxide
Benzoyl peroxide is one of the top-selling over-the-counter treatments that are effective in treating blemishes. It removes the excess oils and dead skin cells to unclog pores. It can cause red, dry skin that burns or stings, according to the Mayo Clinic.
Laser
Laser resurfacing is used to treat blemishes and acute acne. Topical therapy can be used in conjunction with laser treatments to prevent new breakouts, according to the National Institutes of Health. Laser is the most costly method of treatment, but has been proven effective for many skin problems.
