If you like crab fishing, there are many places around the United States where you can practice this enjoyable pastime. Depending upon the area, blue crab, Dungeness crab and even king crab are among the available species that you can catch. Most states where crab fishing takes place offer licenses for residents and out-of-state visitors. Charter fishing companies in many areas also provide day trips for crab fishing.
Chesapeake Bay
The Chesapeake Bay area is a great place to visit and is famous for its blue crabs. A regular saltwater fishing license is usually all that is required. For out-of-state visitors, licenses are available. You can easily catch these tasty crabs from shore with just a line, bait and net. Hoop nets, dip nets and pyramid traps will also catch blue crabs. Check the Maryland and Virginia crab fishing regulations for bag limits, size limits and equipment requirements before you begin. Blue-crab fishing is easy to do on your own or you may consider a charter trip.
Northern California
Another excellent trip is to northern California, where crab fishing is popular. There, hoop fishing is a preferred way to catch Dungeness, rock, red and other crab species. Small crab pots are another option and are often available for rental. Most crab fishing in this area is done from boats, but fishing piers can also produce good crab catches. Be sure to check with local fish and game authorities to identify areas that are legal for crab fishing.
Alaska
While the larger sailing vessels of the Alaskan crab fleet ply the Bering Sea off the coast of northern Alaska, you can be fishing for crabs in the waters of southeastern Alaska. Species available there include Dungeness crab, Tanner crab and red and blue king crab. Alaskan crab fishing is done strictly from boat. Seasons differ, depending upon the type of crab you are fishing. For instance, the season for king crab is year-round, but Tanner crab season is closed during the summer. Local charter fishing companies can help you plan your trip.
