The human body is exposed to toxins every day. These toxins are absorbed either by consumption of unhealthy foods or through environmental sources, such as bacteria, chemicals or pesticides. The body naturally eliminates toxins through the liver, kidney, bladder and intestines. However, with repetitive exposure to these toxins, an accumulative effect can occur, resulting in various symptoms, including fatigue, headache and weight gain. As a result, periodically "detoxing" or cleansing the body can be helpful.

Uva Ursi

The kidneys remove wastes in the body which are diverted to the bladder. Uva ursi naturally cleanses the bladder and kidneys from harmful toxins and bacteria. In March 2010, Steven D. Ehrlich, NMD, from The University of Maryland Medical Center stated, "Researchers have discovered that uva ursi's antibacterial properties, which can fight infection, are due to several chemicals, including arbutin and hydroquinone. The herb also contains tannins that have astringent effects, helping to shrink and tighten mucous membranes in the body. That, in turn, helps reduce inflammation and fight infection."
The recommended dosage of urva ursi in capsule or tablet form is 700 to 1000 mg, three times per day. Uva ursi should not be consumed for more than seven days, as it can become toxic and cause liver damage.

Cranberry Juice

To cleanse the bladder, consider using cranberry. Cranberry contains proanthocyanidins, which prevent bacterial overgrowth and inhibit bacterial adhesion, thereby making it a natural remedy for urinary tract infections. In a study published on PubMed.gov, it was found that "Cranberry extracts inhibited the growth of wide range of human pathogenic bacteria." Cranberry juice also cleanses the stomach. According to the Mayo Clinic, cranberry potentially reduces the ability of H. pylori, an ulcer-causing bacteria, to live in the stomach.
For cleansing purposes, drink two to three eight-oz. glasses of cranberry juice a day. It is important to use cranberry or cranberry juice that does not contain sugar, which can reverse the positive effects of the cranberry.

Dandelion Tea & Milk Thistle

The liver is a detoxifying organ. Maintaining liver health improves its ability to remove toxins from the body. Both milk thistle and dandelion are purported to improve liver health. The National Center for Complementary Medicine notes, "Milk thistle is a flowering herb that is native to the Mediterranean region. It has been used for thousands of years as a remedy for a variety of ailments, especially liver problems."
As part of a cleansing program, rotating your consumption of milk thistle at 200 to 400 mg per day and dandelion tea at one to two cups per day is the most beneficial for your liver.

Psyllium & Probiotics

Cleansing the gut is also important. This can be achieved by use of psyllium hulls or husks. Psyllium is a natural soluble dietary fiber, which binds to toxins in the gut and removes them from the body. Psyllium comes in seed, powder or capsule form. For psyllium seeds, the recommended dose is ½ to two tsp. at bedtime. The dosages for powders and capsule vary depending on the manufacturer.
It is also beneficial to use a probiotic to help promote restoration of the healthy balance of normal flora, or friendly bacteria, within the intestines. Numerous health benefits accompany the regular consumption of probiotics. The journal "Nutrition Review" reported that "The intake of probiotics has been associated with beneficial effects on the immune system, such as improved disease resistance." There are rarely any side effects associated with probiotic use. Like psyllium, the dosage of probiotics depends on the manufacturer.

Chlorophyll

As part of a cleansing program, taking chlorophyll will help cleanse the blood stream. Chlorophyll is the substance which gives leafy plants their green color. Chlorophyll has been shown to increase the hemoglobin count in the blood, resulting in increased oxygenation. It also protects the mitochondria, or the energy source of human cells, from oxidative damage. A study published on PubMed.gov notes, "Chlorophyll is a highly effective antioxidant, capable of protecting mitochondria against oxidative damage induced by various reactive oxygen species."
The dosage of chlorophyll is 100 mg, two or three times per day. There are rarely side effects associated with chlorophyll use, but it should not be consumed with blood-thinning medications. It is important to talk with your physician or pharmacist before beginning a cleansing program or taking any supplement.
