Overview
Autoerotic asphyxiation is the induction of cerebral anoxia--a deficiency of oxygen in the brain--through self-applied suffocation methods while masturbating. The lack of blood, and therefore oxygen, to the brain can produce giddiness, exhilaration or a self-induced "high." This sexual practice is still an enigma for most of society, although some teens who are experimenting with sexuality may practice it.
Complications
Of course, the solitary thrills of asphyxiating oneself are short-lived and self-endangering. Autoerotic asphyxiation may weaken one's self-control and judgment during suffocation and sometimes results in accidental death. It is estimated that between 500 and 1,000 deaths occur annually in the United States from this dangerous type of masturbation. Most commonly performed by young adult males, it almost always remains a secret until one dies accidentally. Many believe that the self-endangerment inherent in the technique enhances the person's sexual gratification. Autoerotic asphyxiation participants often use a plastic bag, rope, belt or another device to cause their asphyxiation. Occasionally, this practice is incorporated into a form of bondage that some couples practice. There is the myth that having a partner present eliminates the risk of death, as this partner can prevent prolonged anoxia by removing the offending object (i.e. plastic bag, rope, etc). However, any level of anoxia can be dangerous, and if the anoxia triggers a cardiac arrest (heart stops beating), it can be difficult to revive the victim. Asphyxiation is best left to fantasy.
Treatment
If you are considering practicing self-asphyxiation, or already practice it, please consider the potential consequences involved. If you have a problem with controlling your impulses and have difficulty stopping this practice, talk to a trusted adult or healthcare provider about getting help. Most good healthcare providers with plenty of practice experience are non-judgmental and have heard it all in terms of various sexual practices. Do not let fear or embarrassment stop you from getting help.
