Copper is a dietary mineral that is essential in a number of the body's functions. Although it is only required in relatively small amounts, a copper deficiency can be detrimental to your health. According to the Linus Pauling Institute, it is said that Hippocrates prescribed copper compounds as treatment for diseases as early as 400 B.C. Copper supplements can not only help to meet nutritional intake requirements, but also offer a number of benefits.

Anemia

The Mayo Clinic notes that the body needs copper to utilize iron efficiently, and a deficiency of this mineral may cause anemia. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, or UMMC, taking copper supplements is beneficial for people who suffer from anemia. This is because, in the body, copper works in tandem with iron to form hemoglobin, the primary component of red blood cells.

Wounds

UMMC reports that copper is a mineral that helps to heal wounds. It cites studies showing that when applied topically as part of a wound dressing, copper not only promotes faster healing, but also minimizes the risk of wound contamination. Researchers also report that applying copper directly onto the wound may help with the renewal and regeneration of the skin.

Osteoporosis

The Mayo Clinic reports that a lack of copper in the body may cause osteoporosis, a condition that is characterized by a loss of bone density. Copper supplements may be used to reverse this deficiency. In a monograph on copper, MedlinePlus writes that copper supplementation may be used to treat or prevent abnormalities of bone development such as osteopenia, which are associated with copper deficiency.

Burns

The University of Maryland Medical Center notes that studies have shown that individuals who have burned skin tend to lose significant amounts of minerals and nutrients, which may slow down the healing process and increase the risk of infection. Of all the minerals that are lost, copper is the one most that is lost the most rapidly. While there is no evidence indicating that copper is the most beneficial of all minerals for burn patients, UMMC notes that including copper into a multivitamin supplement may speed up recovery.

Arthritis

UMMC cites clinical studies on animals showing that taking copper supplements orally may slow down the progression of arthritis. Applying a copper solution topically has also been effective in treating individuals suffering from this condition. MedlinePlus cites reports that suggest that copper salicylate supplements, in particular, may be more effective in alleviating arthritis symptoms than taking copper alone.
