Shooting is one of the most essential skills in basketball. Help your players practice and develop this important skill with focused shooting drills. Alternate between drills that apply pressure to the shooter with more relaxed drills that reward success. You can vary certain drills to focus on different shots, such as lay-ups or three-point shots.
Wire Catch Shooting
This drill helps players work on passing, shooting and rebounding. Divide the team into three groups. Have one group line up behind the basket, one beside the free-throw line and one behind the center-court line. Give a ball to the first person in line at the free-throw line. That player passes the ball to the first person in line at the center-court and then runs to join the line at center court. The player receiving the ball at the center-court line dribbles toward the three-point line and shoots, then joins the line behind the basket. The first player in line behind the basket takes the rebound and passes the ball to the next player in line at the free-throw line, then joins that line. Keep the drill moving so that each person gets to pass through all three lines several times.
Free Throws
This drill combines conditioning with free-throw practice. Have one player at a time shoot free throws while the rest of the team circles the court. The player shooting must make three free throws in a row or else the team must run an additional lap. The threat that a missed free throw will cost teammates an additional lap simulates the pressure of free throws in a real game.
Speed Shooting
Have one player shoot at a time while the rest of the team watches and feeds the player balls. Each player has one minute to make as many shots as possible. Designate a particular shot for the players to work on, such as lay-ups, free throws or three-point shots. Encourage the rest of the team to cheer the shooter on and count out the number of baskets she makes during the minute. Continue the drill until every player has had a minute to shoot, and then reward the player who made the most baskets by allowing him to skip that practice's sprints.
