Trying out for any sport can be intimidating for players and tough for coaches to make decisions. However, there are fun and challenging drills that can be implemented that also can show the skill levels of the players. Drills such as two on six, hitting around team blocks and serving relays can make any volleyball tryout successful.

Two on Six Drill

Place two players on one side and six players on the opposite side. This drill pushes the two-player team to work harder and improve their communication skills, which is a key essential in volleyball. Also, this drill will challenge players who are already confident in their skills.

Hitting Around a Team Block

Place at least five or six blockers on one side of the net. On the opposite side, position a setter and a hitter. The setter must set the ball to the hitter who, in turn, has to hit over the blockers. The hitter cannot tip or hit the ball over the blockers. The purpose of the drill is to force the hitter to hit through the blockers.

Serving Relay

Separate players into equal teams on the same side. The first team to successfully complete all of their serves wins. However, if one player misses her serve, she has to continue serving until the serve is completed successfully. To make it more challenging, have the players serve to each position on the opposite side of the court.
