Despite the claims of certain products and advertising campaigns, there is no single ointment or cure-all for hair growth. According to the web resource Bella Online, the human scalp releases new hair at a consistent rate of half an inch per month, which can generally only be increased by promoting the overall health of the individual. While certain healthy lifestyle habits have been linked to increased hair production---such as adequate sleep, consistent exercise and a low-fat, high-fiber diet---a few key specific actions can offer immediate results over the course of two to three months.

Step 1

Create a list of your daily dietary habits and schedule and mark any items that are high in fats, sugars and dairy products. Reduce or replace these foods with whole grains, fruits, seafood and leafy greens in order to increase your levels of vitamins B, C, E, beta-carotene and magnesium.

Step 2

Cut the dead ends of your hair by examining the ends of your hair strands in the light and noticing where the tips become frayed and split. Using a pair of scissors and a mirror, carefully remove ½ inch or more of hair as needed in an even distribution throughout your hair. Seek help from a friend or hair stylist if necessary.

Step 3

Wash your hair regularly, adding 3 to 4 tbsp. of hair conditioner after rinsing out the shampoo. Apply the hair conditioner to your scalp and gently massage all of your scalp to increase circulation before removing the conditioner.

Step 4

Brush your hair beginning with the bottoms of the strands in order to minimize the amount of damage caused by detangling knots. Gradually repeat your brushing strokes until the hair is free of tangles before rising higher up your hair.

Step 5

Hold your head upside down for 30 to 60 seconds each day in order to stimulate the hair follicles and promote growth. While an unproven and somewhat archaic method, it could potentially lead to increased hair growth. Let your hair hang freely as you hold your head and massage the scalp if desired.

Tips and Warnings

  • Avoid heat styling and other potentially damaging cosmetic changes to your hair, and attempt to brush your hair every day.
