Acne scars are unfortunately a common affliction. There are, however, some home remedies available to aid in the fading of acne scars. Two things to remember when working on a home remedy to heal the skin: consistency and hydration. It takes time to heal scars layer by layer regardless of using a home remedy or seeing a dermatologist. Consistent application of the home remedy is the key to realizing improvements to your scars. Water aids in keeping the skin in optimal health to best perform its healing tasks.
Fade Discoloration
Scars often have darker pigmentation than the surrounding skin tissue. Acne can also leave discolored marks, which are often confused as scars. Apply lemon juice with a cotton ball directly to the scar and leave the juice on the skin for 10 minutes before rinsing. The American Chronicle cautions this treatment can leave your skin sensitive to the sun's rays and sunscreen should be applied prior to long sun exposure.
Exfoliate
Exfoliating is a great way to smooth scars away. Baking soda is an all-natural exfoliant that works similar to home microdermabrasion treatments, which scrape the surface layer away to reveal new skin underneath. Create a paste using 2 parts water and 1 part baking soda, and apply the mixture to the affected areas with your fingers. Gently massage the scarred skin for one minute. Rinse the mixture off and pat the skin dry with a clean towel.
Moisturize
There are many home remedies to aid in moisturizing your skin to soften the scar and surrounding tissue. Vitamin E contains antioxidants and can penetrate deep to the base of the scar, healing it from the bottom up. Aloe vera is another well-known moisturizer that contains healing properties. Mixed with vitamin E, aloe vera's healing properties are enhanced. Olive oil is another moisturizer that has been used for generations, and very little is needed---the American Chronicle recommends only a pea-sized amount to cover the entire face.
Mask
A combination of sandalwood and rose water is one of the most touted home remedies for treating scars. Mix sandalwood powder and rose water until a paste forms, and apply the paste directly to your skin. Leave it on for at least 30 minutes, but it is often recommended to leave on overnight for the best effect. The sandalwood will help to soften the skin as well as diminish scars.
