Little League Baseball's Rules on Bats

Little League Baseball, a non-profit organization, has existed since 1939. Little League contains five play divisions for boys and girls from ages 5 to 18. If you need to buy baseball bats for your son or daughter or for a whole team, make sure you buy a bat approved for use in Little League competition.

Standard Bat Size

According to baseballcorner.com, approved Little League bats have a maximum of a 2.25-inch diameter barrel and range in length from 28 inches to 32 inches. Little League players who measure 48 to 50 inches tall should look for a 16- or 17-oz. bat; players 51 to 54 inches tall should look for a 17- or-18 oz. bat; players 55 to 59 inches tall should look for an 18- or 19-oz. bat and players 60 inches tall or taller should look for a 19 or 20-oz. bat.

Approved Non-Wood Bats

Little League approves certain equipment for use in its competitions. Little League-approved non-wood bats include aluminum bats as well as composite bats made with multiple materials, such as aluminum, aluminum alloy, graphite fibers and carbon inserts. These bats cannot exceed 32 inches in length.

Approved Wood Bats

Little League approved wood bats contain a range of wood materials, including ash, bamboo and maple. Like non-wood bats, wood bats for Little League competition cannot exceed 32 inches in length.
