Summer in San Diego is the perfect time for active residents to get outside, enjoy the great weather and experience the area you live in to its fullest potential. There are several clubs that residents can join to get involved in various activities. The community also offers plenty to do on your own or with friends. There's something for everyone in San Diego, whether they enjoy hiking and biking or prefer the water sports that are so popular there.

Surfing

Once it's officially summer in San Diego, where the weather is nice year-round, it's time to head to the beaches with your surfboard. According to sandiego.org, there is more than 75 miles of coastline in San Diego County, with about the same number of special surf spots. Some of the more popular breaks among the locals include: the famous "Trestles," which is a river mouth point break; Del Mar break, which is known for its consistent waves; and Black Beach, which, according to some residents, is considered the best break in the county.

Scuba Diving

In addition to San Diego's soft sand beaches, it also has some world famous dive sites that are often overlooked by locals and tourists alike. There are several places where you can take the opportunity to learn how to scuba dive and get certified. Shop around and see which option works best for you. A popular dive site is La Jolla Cove, a world renowned site teeming with wildlife. Divers also head to Casa Cove to hunt for lobster and some head further into the ocean to explore the vast kelp beds.

Hiking

San Diego County has several state parks, reserves and open areas, where hiking on all sorts of terrain is possible. Head to Cowles Mountain for great views or to Ramona Waterfall in the early summer while the falls are still surging. Other hikes are in Torrey Pines State Reserve, Sunset Cliffs and El Cajon Mountain. To see a comprehensive list and rating of trails, see the link in Resources.

Mountain Biking

San Diego mountain bikers might want to consider joining the San Diego Mountain Biking Association, which is an organization committed to responsible biking habits and maintaining the environment. It offers information on rides in the area, outreach for environmental issues and an opportunity to meet other San Diego mountain bikers. Mountain biking is possible throughout San Diego County in a variety of settings such as the mountain areas, deserts and canyons.

Farmer's Markets

According to sandiegoroots.org, as of late 2009 there were more than 40 farmer's markets operating within San Diego County. Farmer's markets are the place to go to support local and organic farms while sampling some of the region's freshest produce. Check with the San Diego Farm Bureau to find a market near you.
