Low carb foods are common in weight loss and diabetic meal plans. Diet plans such as Atkins and South Beach have promoted low carb eating as the key to shedding pounds and keeping them off. Limiting carbs has another benefit--it may improve alertness. According to Selene Yeager, author of "The Doctors Book of Food Remedies," carbohydrate rich foods cause the brain to release tryptophan, a sedating chemical. Numerous low carb food products are available for weight loss and increased focus.
Eggs
Eggs are ideal low carb foods, according to Lisa Shea, author of Bella Online. They are high in protein and low in carbohydrates. They are also versatile--eggs can be used in any meal of the day, and can also be used in between-meal snacks.
Canned Tuna
Canned tuna is another low carb food that offers plenty of protein. It can last for months on your pantry shelf, and can be easily slipped into a purse or lunch bag for easy portability. Shea recommends buying chunk light tuna packed in water, rather than purchasing albacore tuna. Also, tuna cans with pull-top lids eliminate the hassle of searching for a can opener.
Cheese Sticks
Cheese offers a boost of energy without adding unnecessary carbs. Mozzarella and cheddar cheeses are good choices for low carb dieters, according to Shea. Both are available as individually-packaged cheese sticks--this makes it convenient for taking along a few as mid-day snacks.
Sauerkraut
Sauerkraut is a low calorie, low carbohydrate option that can be served with a variety of meats or eaten plain. According to the Nutrition Data website, a 1 cup serving of sauerkraut provides 35 percent of the recommended daily intake of vitamin C.
