While the workweek brings stress and hectic schedules to some employees in New York City, weekdays are never boring. Tuesday nights in the city, while not as active as some other evenings closer to the weekend, are an ideal time to explore the city and see the workweek crowds. If you want to join the downtown scene, think about attending local downtown events. If you would rather skip out and see behind-the-scenes New York, go your own way and explore the bike trails and outdoor events the city has to offer.
Sailing
Consider sailing along a twinkling Manhattan island on a tall ship. While other New York City sailing companies offer weekend specials and other night deals, Manhattan By Sail (ManhattanBySail.com) offers a Tuesday evening Twilight Sailing cruise departing from the Chelesea Piers at 7 p.m. A sailing trip lets guests enjoy the sun setting behind the Statue of Liberty and offers wines and cocktails from the tall ship's bar. As of June 2010, adults sail for $45, children 12 and under for $20 and seniors 60 and over for $38.
Photo Opportunities
While you can take photographs any day of the week, think about making a photo-op trip around the city for an hour or two on Tuesday night. As a weekday, you will capture scenes from the city that change on slower-paced weekends.
According to a feature in New York Magazine highlighting the top places in the city to photograph by night, consider toting your camera to the Grand Army Plaza at the intersection of Flatbush Avenue and Eastern Parkway in Prospect Park, Brooklyn. As Brooklyn's version of the Arc de Triomphe, the Grand Army Plaza 80-foot arch decoratively frames the park's rich forestry and walkways, where people coming home from work or school in the evening walk through. Also take photos at Grand Central Terminal. At first you might get pinned to the wall from all the rushing and bustling in the main concourse, but once you get your footing, look up: a restored, blue constellation painted mural stretches across the ceiling, meeting the 60-foot-tall windows. Take photos of the weekday passersby in the warm, photo-friendly lighting.
Anyway Cafe -- Tuesday Night Live Jazz
Anyway Cafe features live jazz music every Tuesday night from 9 p.m. to midnight. Located on the lower East Side, this rambunctious and fun cafe features international jazz guitarists, from Russian musicians to Brazilian and classic rock artists. Come early for a drink or a seat in the old-fashioned wood bar before the music begins.
Bike Ride
In the spring and summer, bike rides in New York City are deliciously fun and comfortable. As of 2010, the newest popular bike trail is The River Road path. The River Road trail offers bikers Hudson River views, cliffs, natural waterfalls, wildflowers and little traffic. To begin the trail, bike north up the West Side greenway and cross the George Washington Bridge. After exiting at the Hudson Terrace, follow the sidewalk to the pedestrian and bike path that turns into Henry Hudson Drive, which is also River Road. Ride along the river for around eight miles. Go left at every split until you get to Alpine, a break on the way for water and maps. Continue on Route 9 before it gets too dark and bike your way back into downtown.
