New backpackers often pack with creature comforts in mind. They end up with heavy packs that make hiking difficult and unpleasant, according to the Backpacking Lightweight website. A heavy backpack can also contribute to irritability and exhaustion on the hiking trail, notes Alan Dixon, author of "Adventure Alan's Ultralight Backpacking." Ultralight backpacking requires careful planning and choosing gear with weight, instead of comfort, in mind.
Ultralight Quilt
An ultralight quilt is typically filled with "power down," a material that maximizes warmth without adding weight. Some versions have a slit in the middle so that they can double as a poncho, notes Dixon. These quilts weigh well below 1 lb. Ultralight quilts can be expensive. As of June 2010, you can expect to pay about $200.
Ultralight Backpack
Ultralight backpacks protect your gear without weighing you down. Dixon notes that some of these backpacks weigh as little as 3.8 oz. As of June 2010, ultralight backpacks start at about $60.
Rain Jacket
According to Dixon, an ultralight rain jacket is a necessity on the trail. Look for a jacket made of Propore fabric, which is both waterproof and breathable. Also, if you choose a rain jacket with a hood, you can stuff the rest of the jacket into the hood to make a pillow.
Ultralight Trekking Poles
Trekking poles will help you keep your footing on the hiking trails, preventing falls and injuries. They can also be used as tarp supports, Dixon said. Ultralight trekking poles weigh about 2.4 oz. each.
Sleeping Pad
A sleeping pad adds insulation from the cold of the ground, according to Dixon. Ultralight sleeping pads weigh 3 to 4 oz., although they add bulk to your pack. You can trim your sleeping pad to reduce weight and bulk.
Lightweight Tarp
A small tarp that can accommodate two people is a worthwhile addition to your ultralight pack, Dixon said. It allows you to rest on a sleeping pad without getting wet, while keeping you from having to carry around a heavy, bulky tent. Small lightweight tarps weigh under 3 oz.
