If you hate to shave and don't want to spend the money on waxing, electrolysis or laser therapy, a home hair removal device may be a good choice. These devices work by grasping the individual strands of hair and pulling them out from the root, by killing the follicle with a small electric charge, or with a small laser device. Epilators, home electrolysis and home laser hair removal systems are an option for those looking for long-term hair removal at a lower cost than salon waxing or laser hair removal services.

Epilators

Epilators are small devices, about the size of an electric razor. These hair removal tools use wire coils to grasp the hair strands and pull them out from the root. Modern versions incorporate massaging features to relax the skin and reduce discomfort during epilation. According to MyBeautySpace.com, it may take several uses to notice relatively thorough hair removal. You can expect epilation to last for up to four weeks before you notice regrowth. Most epilators can be used on the legs and underarms, but some may include special heads for the bikini line.

Home Electrolysis

Electrolysis removes hair by using a small electrical charge to kill the hair follicle. It may take multiple uses to eliminate a single follicle, according to HairFacts.com. Eventually, killing the hair follicle provides permanent hair removal. Electrolysis may cause some discomfort and leave small red marks on the skin that last from few hours to a few days. There are only a few home electrolysis units on the market, including the Clean and Easy Deluxe Home Electrolysis and the Vector Electrolysis Hair Removal System.

Home Laser Hair Removal

Professional laser treatments by doctors and trained estheticians are a popular, but costly hair removal choice. FDA approved home laser devices are an alternative that offer permanent hair removal without the expense of the doctor's office. Laser devices on the market today include the Silk'n and the Tria. The device is pressed into the skin and a burst of light emitted. After about two weeks, the hair will fall out. It will take multiple uses over time to reduce hair growth. According to ABCNews.com, both the Tria and the Silken were effective on the leg and bikini line. Like commercial laser hair removal devices, these are most effective if you have fair skin and dark body hair.
