Chest congestion can be caused for a number of reasons including colds, asthma, allergies or infections. This condition can lead to inflammation of the respiratory tract and also cause bacterial infections such as pneumonia to develop. Clearing chest congestion can sometimes be difficult. However, various herbal remedies may help you tackle this problem.

Anise

Anise is an herb that can be helpful with clearing up respiratory tract congestion. Anise has antibacterial properties as well as expectorant properties. According to Columbia University, anise can be given in the form of a tea that is made with crushed or powdered seeds. However, other ingredients, such as sugar, garlic, allspice, cinnamon or honey are also added to the tea to make it more palatable. Anise can be purchased at most health food stores. However, according to Columbia University, you should not use this herb if you have had an allergic reaction to anethole.

Syrup of Horseradish

Horseradish is often thought of as a spicy condiment. However, the herb can also be an excellent remedy for treating chest congestion. According to the Columbia University, horseradish clears chest congestion by acting as an expectorant. You can purchase this product at any health food store and it comes already packaged and prepared and ready for use as an elixir. However, according to Columbia University, this remedy is safe for use with adults but should not be administered to children less than 4 years of age. Also, this remedy should not be used if you are sensitive to iodine.

Eucalyptus

According to Organic Facts, eucalyptus is an effective decongestant and helps to clear blocked airways. Eucalyptus can be used by adding a few drops of the essential oil to a pot of boiling water. Take a towel and drape it over your head and breathe in the vapors of the steam. This helps to loosen the congestion in the respiratory tract. You can also purchase eucalyptus products over the counter at many retail stores and pharmacies. For a stubborn case of chest congestion, it may be helpful to apply a chest rub that contains eucalyptus.
