One of the most common causes of joint pain is osteoarthritis. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, osteoarthritis is a condition where the cartilage between the joints breaks down and the bones begin to rub together, which in turn causes pain. Turmeric, devil's claw, willow bark, ginger and licorice are among herbs that can help relieve joint pain.

Turmeric

The Nutritional-Supplement-Education-Centre reports that turmeric is often used to ease joint pain and inflammation associated with arthritis. It is thought to reduce inflammation by lowering histamine levels. The University of Maryland Medical Center also recommends turmeric for pain and inflammation, with a dosage of 300 milligrams three times a day.

Devil's Claw

MedlinePlus.com documents that there is increasing scientific evidence suggesting that devil's claw is beneficial for arthritis pain, and that it may be as equally effective as ibuprofen. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, one study found that more than fifty percent of people with knee or hip arthritis reported less pain after eight weeks of taking devil's claw. Their recommended dosage is 100 to 200 milligrams one or two times a day.

Willow Bark

Willow bark acts similar to aspirin per the University of Maryland Medical Center. It is an ancient herb, used today for treatment of arthritis pain. It appears to be slower acting than aspirin to bring pain relief, however its effects may last longer. A study of 78 patients found that the ones who received willow bark had significant pain relief when compared to those who received a placebo. The dosage is 500 milligrams up to three times a day.

Ginger

The University of Maryland Medical Center states that one study found that ginger extract inhibits COX-2, a chemical in the body that causes pain. Taking up to two grams per day may reduce joint inflammation and pain.

Licorice

Licorice acts in the body like a cortisol with significant anti-inflammatory activity, according to holisticonline.com. The University of Illinois Medical Center adds that licorice allows natural steroids to be produced by the adrenal glands to reduce inflammation in joints.
