Acne is also often referred to as pimples, zits or blemishes. Acne is caused by dead skin cells shedding abnormally, overproduction of oil or from bacteria building up, according to the Mayo Clinic. These three factors can result in the follicles, also referred to as pores, becoming clogged. Several herbs can be used to heal acne, if you prefer to use more natural methods. However, it is important to discuss any herb with your doctor before using it.
Tea Tree Oil
This herb is purported to have antimicrobial properties and antiseptic properties, according to the Mayo Clinic. These two properties are beneficial in cleaning the skin, which can help to remove excess oil, dead skin cells and bacteria. Tea tree oil should be applied to the skin only because consuming it can be toxic. However, this herb can mildly irritate the skin and cause allergic contact dermatitis, so it should be used with care.
Guggel
Guggel may be effective in healing acne due to its purported ability to reduce the swelling and redness that are associated with acne, says RxList. Guggel can cause side effects such as upset stomach, hiccups, headaches, belching, nausea, diarrhea, loose stools and vomiting. Using guggel if you suffer from certain illnesses is not recommended; these include thyroid disorders, uterine fibroids, ovarian cancer, breast cancer, endometriosis and uterine cancer. This herb may also increase your bleeding risk, so it should not be taken two weeks prior to having surgery. Breastfeeding women, or those who are currently pregnant, should not use this herb.
Oregon Grape
This herb, also referred to as mahonia, is taken internally to help heal acne. It is said to reduce sebum, inflammation and infection, says Herbal Supplement Resource. It is also said to have antibacterial properties. Skin side effects are possible, including red, burning or itching skin.
