Reasons for Facial Hair in Women

Women may experience a stray chin hair from time to time, but facial hair, such as mustaches and beards, is not normal and can indicate an underlying disease or condition. If you notice excess facial hair, it is important to see your doctor so that he can determine whether an underlying disease is the culprit.

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome

In the United States, it is estimated that up to 5 million women are affected by this disease, says The National Women's Health Center. This condition occurs due to a hormonal imbalance in which the ovaries produce too much androgen hormones. When women have high levels of the androgen hormone, they can experience acne, weight gain, ovarian cysts, excessive hair growth and ovulation problems.

Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia

This condition is caused by the absence of the enzyme that the adrenal gland uses to produce the aldosterone and cortisol hormones. Due to the absence of these hormones, more of the male hormone androgen is produced, resulting in male characteristics, such as facial hair, to appear inappropriately or early, according to Medline Plus. In addition to excess facial hair, women can experience abnormal menstrual periods, not menstruating, a deep voice and genitals that resemble both female and male genitalia.

Cushing's Syndrome

When the body is exposed to high levels of steroid hormones, mainly cortisol, Cushing's syndrome can occur, according to Medline Plus. Taking too much of these hormones, such as by taking certain medications, can also cause Cushing's syndrome. In addition to excess facial hair, most women will also experience thin legs and arms with upper body obesity, and a red, round full face.
