Achilles tendinitis occurs when the Achilles tendon becomes inflamed, injured or irritated. The Achilles tendon is the band of tissue that connects the calf muscles to the heel bone. The plantar fascia is the band of tissue that connects the heel to the toes. When the plantar fascia becomes tight, it causes recurring pain. This pain is known as plantar fasciitis. Both Achilles tendinitis and plantar fasciitis respond well to home treatment.
Rest
If a patient identifies an activity that has caused Achilles tendinitis or plantar fasciitis, it is important to avoid engaging in that activity. These conditions are commonly caused by overuse of the tendon or by a sports injury, so refraining from similar activities can prevent symptoms from occurring, states the University of Maryland Medical Center.
Ice Treatment
The primary symptom of Achilles tendinitis and plantar fasciitis is pain which results from the tightness of the affected tendons. Applying ice is a recommended method for reducing pain, states MayoClinic.com. Patients can apply ice to the affected area in the form of an ice pack or cold compress. Ice packs can be purchased at most pharmacies or drugstores. Patients can make a simple cold compress by placing ice in a plastic bag and tying a knot in the top. The ice pack or cold compress should be wrapped in a clean, dry towel and apply to the affected area for 15 to 20 minutes several times per day.
Patients can also utilize ice baths as a form of treating extremities affected by Achilles tendinitis or plantar fasciitis. This involves soaking feet in a cool water bath to which 1qt. of ice has been added. Soak feet for five to 10 minutes.
Another option for ice treatment is performing an ice massage. This is done by filling a plastic cup with water and freezing it. Before use, a clean, dry towel is placed over the affected area. The frozen cup is then placed on its side and firmly rolled over the area. This helps to relieve pain and tightness that contributes to the tendinitis or fasciitis.
Pain Relievers
While rest and ice treatment help to relieve pain and reduce tightness in the tendons, some patients may need to take a pain reliever to relieve pain. The treating physician may recommend taking an NSAID, or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug, such as acetaminophen, ibuprofen or naproxen. Extreme pain may be treated with a prescription pain medication.
