Rose hip oil is extracted from the seeds of a native rose plant that grows wild in Chile. It has been used cosmetically by the native people of Chile for centuries. Rose hip oil can be applied directly to the skin and is easily absorbed. Rose hip oil is high in beneficial antioxidant vitamins and essential fatty acids, and is used primarily to protect, heal and nourish the skin.
Scar Reduction
Rose hip oil may help to diminish scars. Rose hip oil is rich in lycopene, which has been found in laboratory studies to possess antioxidant qualities. According to the Flora Health website, Chilean researchers conducted a two-year study on 180 patients with scars from surgery, injuries and burns, and found that rose hip oil helped to regenerate skin and attenuate scars.
Wrinkle Reduction
You can use rose hip oil to fight wrinkles from sun damage. According to the Dermaxime website, research conducted by Dr. Bertha Pareja and Dr. Horst Kehl suggested that daily applications of rose hip oil helped with wrinkle reduction and helped to fade sun damage in 20 women between 25 and 35 years old who used it for four months. Rose hip oil may owe its rejuvenating properties to the fact that it contains a natural source of trans-retinoic acid--a Vitamin A oil--as well as the antioxidant vitamin E.
Skin Lightening
Rose hip oil is high in ascorbic acid, or vitamin C, a natural skin lightener, and is often employed to lighten age spots, freckles and areas of hyperpigmentation.
Skin Soothing
Rose hip oil contains high levels of nonsaturated fatty acids--including 47 percent linoleic acid and 33 percent linolenic acid--both of which have skin-soothing properties. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center website, linolenic acid may help treat skin conditions such as eczema.
Moisturizing
Rose hip oil is a natural moisturizer; use it to hydrate and nourish the skin on your face, hands and feet or for all-over softening. The oil owes its moisturizing and emollient qualities to its high content of oleic acid, an omega-9 fatty acid.
Relaxation
According to the Herbs 2000 website, you may get relief from melancholy, insomnia or grief by dissolving two drops of rose hip oil in bathwater and soaking in it.
