Turmeric, or Curcuma longa, has been used for thousands of years as both a cooking spice and a medicine, and enjoys widespread popularity as an ingredient in various home remedies. Medical research into turmeric's curative effects--including fighting cancer and lowering cholesterol-- is promising. However, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center website, most turmeric studies have not yet been performed on humans, only in test tubes or on animals. Turmeric can interact with some prescription medications; consult your doctor before you take it.

Indigestion Remedy

A teaspoon of turmeric mixed into a cup of yogurt makes a good home remedy for indigestion. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center website, the curcumin in the turmeric stimulates the gallbladder to produce bile, which may aid digestion. In addition, turmeric has carminative effects, which means it can help to relieve bloating and gas.

Lowers Blood Sugar

A teaspoon of turmeric mixed in a glass of amla--or gooseberry--juice and taken daily is a remedy intended to help diabetics to normalize blood glucose and reduce insulin resistance. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center website, animal studies have been performed that suggest that turmeric can lower blood sugar.

Antiseptic Properties

Mix turmeric powder with honey to make a paste, and apply over freshly-washed cuts and scrapes to prevent infection. Turmeric has antibacterial and antiseptic effects; it can also be used to control bleeding from fresh cuts.

Skin Lightener

A half a teaspoonful of turmeric powder can help to lighten freckles and age spots when mixed with a quarter cup of lime juice and applied to skin for 20 minutes twice a day for several days. Vitamin C in the turmeric functions as a natural skin lightener.

Home Remedy for Arthritis

People suffering with arthritis and rheumatism turn to turmeric to treat their symptoms of painful, stiff joints. A paste made by mixing a teaspoonful of turmeric with extract of ginger is applied to affected areas. According to the National Library of Medicine website, curcumin in turmeric lowers levels of inflammatory enzymes.

Psoriasis and Eczema Remedy

Turmeric capsules, taken twice a day, are a home remedy for the rough, inflamed, itching skin of psoriasis. According to the People's Pharmacy website, curcumin's anti-inflammatory and antioxidant qualities show promise for treating psoriasis and other conditions.

Cold and Respiratory Infections

To combat colds and respiratory infections, mix 1 tsp. of turmeric powder and 1/4 tsp. of crushed black pepper into a cup of milk. According to the National Library of Medicine, turmeric may have antiviral properties.
