Take a healthy bite out of the Big Apple on your next visit by taking advantage of some of the pleasurable activities that New York City has in store for visitors. Some of the activities are low-cost and better yet, some are free. New York City is full of engaging activities that you can do solo, with a group or even with your kids.
Walking Tours
Avoid the subway tolls and get out and walk while you are visiting New York City. Walking tour companies take visitors on tours of historic and ethnic New York City neighborhoods like Harlem or Greenwich Village. If you are visiting New York City with your family, take them on a walking tour through Central Park. The mile-long Family Tour takes you through Central Park's popular family attractions including the zoo and the carousel. Download the free walking tour podcast or download a map from the Central Park website before you go.
Riding
Saddle up to see the sights from horseback along a six-mile bridle path through Central Park. Individuals visiting Central Park can see the sights, such as the reservoir and the North Meadow baseball field, on horseback during normal park hours. If four-legged riding is not your thing, rent a bike from the Loeb Boathouse in Central Park from March to October and take a cruise on one of Central Park's three bicycle routes where you can view park attractions including Strawberry Fields, Shakespeare Garden and Belvedere Castle.
Food
Burn some calories walking among the vendor's tents at one of the local green markets that take place on Saturdays in Queens and Brooklyn. Farmers are on hand to sell organic, locally grown vegetables, eggs, wild seafood, fruit and baked goods.
Yoga
Work the kinks out at a free yoga class in Bryant Park on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Hatha yoga classes meet on Saturday mornings at the Long Island Sound hockey rink. Join the locals at Socrates Sculpture Park for free weekend classes in yoga, tai chi, Pilates or Capoeira, an intense Brazilian martial art.
Bowling
Take the family or a group of friends to one of New York City's many bowling alleys. According to "The New York Times," there are 23 in the area. Alleys are available in Brooklyn, Staten Island, Manhattan and the Bronx and are an affordable way to have some fun and exercise a little at the same time.
