For years, Pigeon Forge was the little sister of nearby Gatlinburg, but now it is a bustling tourist town in its own right and advertises that it is a more affordable option for a Smoky Mountain vacation. There are all the entertainment options in town, as well as many accommodations to satisfy any taste. But this is the heart of the Great Smoky Mountains, and there are many things to do in the great outdoors here.

Walking in the Woods

A great relaxing time can be had, as well as excellent exercise, with a walk in the woods. Outfitters, or guides, in Pigeon Forge will help you take the kind of walk you want. They can help you plan and take a multi-day trip along the Appalachian Trail, or just a short hike on a nearby trail.
The Appalachian Trail is the most famous, but there are many other trails in the many parks around Pigeon Forge. You may choose between a guided or non-guided hike. On the non-guided hike, they give you the route and any equipment you might need, drop you off and pick you up. You may also choose the length or level of difficulty you want.

White Water

Three rivers with rapids--the Pigeon, Nantahala and Cheoah--are all within 15 miles of Pigeon Forge and all provide a great adventure on the water. The Chattooga and Ocoee rivers are also within driving distance. With so many rivers to choose from, it is easy to find one that fits your ability and comfort level, while still providing an exciting experience.
Guides and outfitters provide the rafts for your group. You may also join another group if you do not have one. Often, there is some practice and instruction before you get on the raft and head for the rough water. There is the chance of getting wet or falling into the water, but if guidelines are followed, injuries are rare.

Slower Water

If white water is a little more than you want, there are other options for playing on the water. Canoe and kayak rentals are available from outfitters and guides. Some offer guided trips in canoes or kayaks.
There are calmer areas of rivers, as well as lakes in the area, that are suited to canoes and kayaks, though some do take them on white-water trips.

Forest Adventure

Some white-water companies, and other outfitters, offer zipline experiences. The ziplines are several hundred feet long and go from the top of a mountain to the bottom. You sit in a harness, which is attached to the line. You may swing through the trees like Tarzan.
Another option is a ropes course that some zipline operations also offer. The ropes course is a challenging workout.

Horses

Several riding stables operate around Pigeon Forge. You may bring your own horse or use one of theirs. Many stables have ranches, and you can ride on their trails, either guided or unguided.
The stables offer instruction and guides for longer rides. There are some multi-day trips available.

Winter

Pigeon Forge keeps going in winter, with many skiing options available. There are several ski lodges in the area. There is skiing for the novice who needs instruction and for the experienced skier.
