The most common and typically most effective prescription drugs for erectile dysfunction include sildenafil citrate (Viagra), vardenafil HCl (Levitra) and tadalafil (Cialis). These drugs relax blood vessels in the penile region, increasing blood flow to the penis to facilitate establishing an erection. Erectile dysfunction drugs are generally safe and have limited side effects. A physician should explain potential complications of prescription erectile dysfunction drugs before beginning treatment.

Headache and Dizziness

Men using erectile dysfunction drugs frequently report headaches as a side effect. Headaches are generally a mild, harmless side effect and do not require prompt medical attention. Patients may similarly experience dizziness and vertigo. If headache or dizziness side effects persist or become troublesome, patients should talk to their physician.

Upset Stomach

A number of mild stomach complications can occur while taking erectile dysfunction drugs. Gastrointestinal side effects include upset stomach, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain and loose stool.

Flushing of the Skin

Erectile dysfunction drugs work by increasing blood flow to the penis. In some individuals, blood flow may also be increased to other parts of the body, including the skin. Flushing or reddening of the skin is a relatively common side effect of erectile dysfunction drugs.

Muscle Pain

Certain types of muscle pain are commonly reported with erectile dysfunction drugs. Back and neck pain are often experienced by individuals using these drugs. Arthritis and bone pain have also been reported as side effects of sildenafil citrate.

Hearing Loss or Vision Loss

In rare cases, erectile dysfunction drugs may cause loss of vision or loss or hearing in some men; the reasons for these complications are not understood. Individuals experiencing sudden hearing loss and vision loss in response to erectile dysfunction drugs should seek medical attention immediately.

Priapism

Priapism is a rare condition in which an erection persists and does not go away on its own. Priapism can be a very serious complication as it can block oxygen flow to the penis. Men experiencing an erection for longer than four hours while using erectile dysfunction drugs should seek medical assistance to avoid potential tissue damage to the penis.
