A dry, itchy scalp can be embarrassing and uncomfortable. An itchy scalp may be caused by a variety of issues, including not drinking enough water, using harsh shampoos, or as a side effect of illnesses or prescription medications. Herbal remedies use natural ingredients to successfully deal with mild to moderate itchiness of the scalp.
Aloe Vera
Massage the scalp with aloe vera juice or oil. Break open an aloe vera plant leaf and squeeze out juice, or purchase aloe vera oil from your local vitamin or health food store. Place a few teaspoons of aloe vera juice into the palm of your hand and massage it liberally into the scalp. Aloe vera juice contains components that help to relieve itchy, dry skin, according to Chris Kilham, ethnabotany instructor and founder of the website Medicine Hunter. Allow the aloe vera juice or oil to soak into the scalp for about 30 minutes, then shampoo with a gentle shampoo and rinse well. Repeat the entire procedure for best results.
Burdock
Burdock root oil massaged into the scalp may help provide relief from dry, irritated skin caused by eczema, psoriasis, acne and other conditions that cause a dry, itchy scalp or dandruff, according to Planet Botanic. Squeeze several fresh lemons, remove the seeds and massage the lemon juice into your scalp. You can purchase a Burdock oil tincture and apply 5 ml two times a day for several weeks, or months for chronic skin irritation conditions.
Tea Tree Oil
For relief of itchy scalp caused by psoriasis or other form of dermatitis, try creating a solution of 5 percent tea tree oil mixed with a mild shampoo, suggests Tea Tree Wonders. Tea tree oil can help get get rid of dry, flaky skin. Mix about 1 tsp. of tea tree oil into 32 oz. of a mild shampoo. Apply the shampoo to the scalp daily and then rinse. Repeat this process for a month to get rid of dandruff and your dry, itchy scalp.
