There's more to rebounding than jumping and catching the basketball. Rebounding is a fundamental skill kids should learn early and continue to practice. Rebounding drills cover the multiple aspects of rebounding and prepare kids for game situations. Use a number of rebounding drills to keep kids interested and having fun while learning an important part of the game.
Circle Box-Out Drill
Form two circles, one inside the other. The website Coachesclipboard recommends putting similar-size players together and starting the inside group on defense. Place a ball in the middle, and blow a whistle to start. The outside circle is on offense and tries to get to the basketball in the middle. The defensive players turn and box out for as long as they can.
1-2-3 Rebound
Line up three players in the lane under the hoop, and assign a number to each of them. Line up three offensive players around the three-point line. Call out a number, and pass the ball to one of the perimeter players for a shot. The player in the paint whose number was called runs out to block out the shooter. The offense continues to play until the defense gets the rebound, according to basketballcoach.
Rebounding Box-Out Drill
Form two lines at each elbow of the free-throw line. Give the person at the front of the line the basketball for a shot. The person at the front of the other line runs to the other elbow to defend the shot and box out, according to coachesclipboard. Even if the shot goes in, the defensive player boxes out and gets the rebound.
2-on-1 Rebounding
Three players start in the paint, and another player shoots a free throw. The three players fight for a rebound and try to score after the rebound. Continue playing until one of the players scores three times.
