Blackheads are a form of acne also known as open comedones. Blackheads occur when dead skin cells and oil block a pore. When exposed to air, the oil oxidizes and takes on a blackened appearance. You may remove blackheads at home or seek a help through a dermatologist.

Open the Pores

To allow for easier removal, first open up the pores of the skin by exposing the face to steam. To prepare the skin for blackhead extraction, place your face over a bowl of very hot water. Trap the steam by covering your head and the bowl with a towel. Hover your face over the steaming water for approximately five to 10 minutes before immediately removing the blackheads with a metal blackhead extractor, pore strips or blackhead removal gun.

Be Gentle

When removing blackheads, handle skin gently to avoid bleeding, scarring and infection. For example, tweezers are not typically recommended to remove blackheads beecause they can easily damage the skin. If using a metal blackhead extractor, press down on the skin gently to push the blackhead out of the pore. If you feel any pain when attempting to remove a blackhead, stop the process and seek out professional treatment options.

Limit Use of Pore Strips

You can use pore strips to remove blackheads from the face. To do so, the strip is adhered directly to a moistened area of skin. After waiting 10 minutes for the strip to dry, pull it away from your skin. When you look at the strip, you should notice blackhead debris that you have removed. Although pore strips can be effective, you should not use them too often. According to CareFair.com, they can cause skin sensitivity and veins to appear on the face.
