If you happen to be in New York City on a rainy day, not to worry. New York is the one major city in the world that offers as much indoor fun as outdoor fun for visitors. You may not be able to jog around Central Park--although many New Yorkers do, rain or shine--but you can enjoy indoor leisure activities including massages, rock climbing, vegan dining and seeing a Knicks game.
Go Rock Climbing
Chelsea Piers, located on the Hudson River, is a sprawling indoor sports complex offering every sport imaginable under its roof. At the Field House, adults can learn to rock climb on the 23-foot-high rock wall every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evening. Beginners and experienced climbers are welcome, and the wall is staffed by climbing experts. Reservations are recommended, and all climbing equipment is included.
Get a Massage
New Yorkers know how to pamper themselves, and for that reason, there's a spa on practically every street corner. One of the best known day spas in Manhattan is Dorit Baxter New York Day Spa, where you can treat yourself to massages, facials, and body treatments of all varieties. Dorit Baxter, which is located on 57th Street between Fifth and Sixth avenues, is open seven days a week.
Go Raw
Dine at Pure Food and Wine, New York's popular "raw food" restaurant, located in the Gramercy Park neighborhood. Pure Food and Wine offers a raw vegan menu that is entirely plant based and does not use processed ingredients. But you'll get more than salads here. The extensive menu include entrees like Zucchini, Local Hothouse and Heirloom Tomato Lasagna, Drunken Salsify Noodles in Spicy Almond Butter Sake Sauce, Sweet Corn and Cashew Tamales with Chili Spiced Portabella, and Sweet Pickled Tri-Color Beet Ravioli with Golden Raisin and Pistachio Cheese. Pure Food and Wine, which has been listed for five years on Forbes Magazine's "All Star New York Eateries," is located at 54 Irving Place.
See the Knicks Play
Depending on the season, many New York City visitors come especially to see their favorite sports teams play. The New York Knicks basketball team and the New York Rangers hockey team play indoors in Manhattan, both at Madison Square Garden. This could be a possible rainy day event, but only if you're quick on the draw and purchase tickets as soon as you hear a gloomy forecast. Knicks games, in particular, sell out quickly.
Revive Your Workout Wear
Every now and then, it's time to replace your worn-out sneakers or bike shorts. Even if you don't buy a thing, just browsing in Midtown's huge Niketown store will take a couple of hours. The store, located in the Trump Tower on Fifth Avenue, fills five floors with sneakers, sweats and sportswear, all sporting the unmistakable Nike logo. If you're sneaker aficionado, Niketown is where you'll find Air Jordan 6 Retros, the 2010 Livestrong Lunarglide shoes, and the newly released Jordan IX BIN 23, for which the store had to hand out wristbands. You'll find plenty of shoes endorsed by NBA stars and celebrities, European soccer jerseys, workout clothing, and running shoes with iPods that track your mileage.
