Curcumin is a natural supplement used to treat a myriad of conditions, such as ulcers, hardening of the arteries, gallbladder disease, irritable bowel syndrome, cancers and osteoarthritis. While most people seem to tolerate it well, some possible side effects may occur. As with any new medication, seek the advice of your doctor before taking curcumin.
Allergic Reactions
Some people may develop an allergic reaction to curcumin. Symptoms of an allergic reaction may consist of difficulty breathing, swelling of the lips and tongue, and chest pain. You may develop hives over all or parts of your body. You may develop an itchy rash while taking curcumin. If you develop any signs of an allergic reaction, stop taking curcumin immediately and seek medical treatment.
Nausea, Vomiting and Diarrhea
Nausea, vomiting and diarrhea have been reported in some people taking larger doses of curcumin. If you experience nausea, vomiting or diarrhea while taking it, consult your doctor for advice. Your doctor may suggest taking a smaller dose of the supplement or stopping the supplement altogether.
Increased Risk of Bleeding
Curcumin may cause you to bruise easily or have cuts that take a longer time to stop bleeding. If you notice an increase in bruising or bleeding, notify your doctor immediately. Also, curcumin may cause black, tarry stools. Black, tarry stools may be a sign that you are bleeding in your stomach or intestines somewhere. Again, if you notice black, tarry stools, stop taking curcumin and contact your doctor immediately.
