After a long crying session it's common to end up with red, puffy eyes. According to Dr. Benoit Bacon of the University of Glasgow, when tear glands are stressed, our eyes get itchy. In response, we rub them, causing them to swell. In addition, when we are upset, adrenalin makes blood rush throughout the body. Because the eye area is filled with blood vessels and the surrounding skin is very thin, when blood rushes to this area, our eyes become puffy.

Cold Spoons

When blood vessels are exposed to cold, they constrict, reducing swelling. Therefore, placing cold items on eyes swollen from crying can help reduce puffiness caused by engorged blood vessels. To reduce swelling, Healthguidance.com suggests placing an ordinary metal spoon in the freezer until cold and then placing the rounded bowl of the spoon directly on the eyes for a few minutes. Similarly, MayoClinic.com advises dampening a washcloth with cool water and placing the cloth on the eyes until swelling reduces. Remember to make your washcloth or spoon cold again when it grows warm from the heat from your body.

Egg Whites

You can also use raw egg whites to reduce puffiness. Break an egg into a bowl, taking care to separate the white from the yolk. Beat the egg white until it becomes slightly stiff. Add a few drops of witch hazel into the beaten egg white, and then use a brush to apply to the under eye area. Healthguidance.com reports that this concoction will make your skin feel tighter and appear less puffy.

Cucumber

Cucumbers are frequently used to reduce under-eye puffiness. According to MotherNature.com, cucumbers contain ascorbic acid and caffeic acid, both of which are compounds that reduce swelling. To minimize puffiness, simply place cold cucumber slices on your eyes for several minutes.

Raw Potatoes

Raw potatoes are another popular food item for minimizing puffiness in the eye area. TotalHealthCare.com advises grating the potato, placing a tablespoon of the grated potato on a layer of muslin (or other very fine material), and then putting the muslin on your eyes. To further soothe the eyes, you may want to add a teaspoon of crushed nasturtium seed to the grated potato.
