Cellulite, a condition where the skin takes on a dimply or cottage cheese-like appearance, is a common but potentially embarrassing condition. It can occur on many areas of the body, but it's most common on the thighs and butt. Since cellulite is caused by an accumulation of fat cells, the Mayo Clinic recommends weight loss through diet and exercise as an effective means of reducing cellulite.
Running
Cardiovascular activities such as running are an effective way to burn calories, lose weight and eliminate cellulite. The American Heart Association recommends that healthy adults exercise for a minimum of 30 minutes per day for five days per week. Always contact a health care provider before starting a new exercise routine. Novices may need to start out walking or jogging and gradually build their way to running. Other cardiovascular activities that burn calories and eliminate cellulite include cycling, hiking, tennis, swimming or basketball.
Calf Raises
"The 30-Minute Stop-Cellulite Workout," an article in "Fitness" magazine, recommends the standing calf raise as an effective way to eliminate cellulite. To perform calf raises, stand of the edge of a step with both heels hanging off the side. Lift up onto the balls of your feet and then lower back down. Do at least 10 repetitions. If this isn't challenging enough, perform the same move one leg at a time or with ankle weights.
Walking Lunges With High Arms
According to "So Long Dimples!," an article that appeared in the June 2010 issue of "Shape" magazine, walking lunges tone the legs, butt, arms and core to reduce cellulite. Start by standing with your arms extended over your head and shoulder-width apart. Your feet should be hip-width apart. Lunge forward with the left leg so that your thigh is parallel to the ground. Stand back up and repeat the motion with the right leg forward. Perform 8 to 12 repetitions with your arms extended for the entire duration. For an even greater challenge, perform this exercise while holding free weights or a weight bar in your extended hands.
Yoga
Yoga is another effective way to tone core muscles and eliminate cellulite. "Yoga Journal" recommends cat, cow, dolphin, plank and boat poses to tone core muscles. Beginners may want to try yoga classes, which are typically offered at yoga studios, local gyms and health clubs. A variety of books and DVDs are also available for those who prefer to exercise solo.
