If you're suffering from nasal or sinus congestion, you already know what a nuisance the symptoms can be. According to the New York Times Health Guide, congestion is most commonly caused by the common cold, flu, sinus infection or allergies. If you experience a stuffy nose or congestion in your lungs that lasts longer than two weeks or is accompanied by facial swelling, blurred vision or pain, you should contact your physician.

Eucalyptus Oil

Eucalyptus oil is highly valued in the holistic healing art of aromatherapy for its decongestant, expectorant and antiseptic properties. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC), eucalyptus oil contains chemicals that help to loosen phlegm and prevent infection. Eucalyptus oil is a common active ingredient in many commercially sold cold and flu remedies. Eucalyptus oil is generally inexpensive and can be purchased in most drug and health food stores. For a home remedy for congestion, add five to ten drops of eucalyptus oil to a vaporizer. You can also add a few drops of the oil to a small pot of boiling water. Remove the pot from heat, place a towel over your head and inhale the vapors for 10 to 15 minutes.

Cayenne Pepper

According to the UMMC, Native Americans have used cayenne pepper in traditional medicine for thousands of years. Cayenne pepper can be an effective remedy for nasal and sinus congestion, because it contains capsaicin, a component of chili peppers that acts as a decongestant and expectorant. You can make a tea using cayenne pepper to quickly clear up congestion the next time you have a cold or flu. Simply put one teaspoon of ground cayenne pepper in a cup of hot boiling water. You may want to add a squeeze of lemon for taste. Enjoy while the tea is still hot, as the steam will also help to open up your nasal passages.

Barberry

Barberry is an herb that has been used in traditional folk medicine for at least 2500 years. According to the UMMC, barberry is effective at relieving nasal and sinus congestion, and it may help to ease the inflammation associated with sore throats and bronchitis. You can use one to two teaspoons of the crushed berries in 2/3 cup of boiling water. Allow to steep for 10 to 15 minutes, strain and drink three times daily for relief of congestion.
