The city of Miami is, according to the Miami Information site, the youngest city in America. From the '20s real-estate boom to the Cuban immigration between the '60s and the '80s, Miami has retained its unique culture and established itself as a premier place for travelers. In a city that offers a variety of attractions, ranging from daytime activities to nighttime parties, you're sure to find something that suits your taste.
Tour the City
Miami is a city rich in cultures and sights. Joining a guided tour is a great way to view many of Miami's sights in a short time. Boat and bus tours are available daily in various parts of the city. The Hop-on Hop-off bus tour offered by the Island Queen Cruise Company, for example, lets you see the city on your own terms, spending as little or as much time in one spot as you like.
Beach Activities
Miami is a coastal city located in the south of the Sunshine state and features some of the area's best-known beaches. Many of the beaches offer more than sand and sun, with boardwalks and shopping nearby. Hobie Beach of Key Biscayne is a dog-friendly beach that features a scenic view of the city, biking and jogging trails, plus fishing zones. You can rent water sport gear and learn how to use it at Hobie Beach.
See the Animals
Miami has many Zoos and animal sanctuaries with a wide range of wildlife. The Miami Metro Zoo, which was founded in 1948 with only six animals, as of 2010 boasts more than 900 different animals in the 300-acre park. The Miami Seaquarium boasts Florida native crocodiles, sharks, eels and tropical fish plus daily shows featuring killer whales and sea lions.
Explore the Outdoors
Miami has many outdoor jogging, biking, walking and running trails, offing travelers and locals the chance to enjoy the city while promoting an active and healthy lifestyle. The Hugh Birch State Park has a 2-mile mountain biking trail that's open year-round, while the Oleta State Park has more than six miles of trails. If you wish to explore the outdoors in a more relaxing manner, visit one of the many bird watching sites around the city.
Dive Deep
Near-constant warm weather makes Miami a haven for deep water adventurers. Miami's coasts have some of the best-known diving locations, and Scuba Dive magazine has rated Miami as one of the top 20 areas for divers to explore. Diving options include the natural, tropical reef of Biscayne National Park, which is the only living reef in the United States. You can also explore sunken ships that have been under water for many years.
