Pollen is a small grain found in male plants that is used for reproduction. Unfortunately, it is also the most common cause of allergic rhinitis in people, according to the Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital. When someone is allergic to pollen, the immune system overreacts when it is inhaled, causing bothersome symptoms often referred to as hay fever. The symptoms are often similar to those of a cold.
Nasal Symptoms
One of the most bothersome and annoying symptoms of a pollen allergy is a runny nose similar to what you experience when you have a cold. Some people also have an itchy nose or experience post-nasal drip. After awhile, the nose may become congested or stuffed, making breathing more difficult, according to the National Institutes of Health.
Sneezing
Frequent sneezing is another common sign of a pollen allergy, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. A dry cough can also develop in some cases.
Itchy Eyes
If your eyes or itchy or watery, this can also be a sign of allergic rhinitis caused by a pollen allergy. Some people's eyes also appear red and bloodshot, and the eyelids can become swollen and puffy, according to the National Institutes of Health. In some cases, dark circles can develop under the eyes as well.
Headaches
A pollen allergy can also cause headaches. These headaches are often due to the pressure buildup in the nasal cavities, according to the UMMC. In addition to headaches, people can also sometimes experience pain or pressure in other parts of the face.
Decreased Sense of Smell
Because of the nasal congestion that often develops in people with pollen allergies, the sense of smell can also be impaired. The decreased sense of smell can also have an affect on a person's sense of taste.
Ear Stuffiness
The ears can also feel stuffed or congested because of allergic rhinitis. Some people also may experience temporary hearing loss because of the ear congestion, according to the UMMC.
Sore Throat
A sore, scratchy throat can also develop because of a pollen allergy. The throat may also feel itchy in some cases.
Fatigue
Unexplained fatigue is common in people who are suffering from a pollen allergy. Some people also feel lethargic or may feel like their thinking and mental processes are slowed or impaired, according to the National Institutes of Health.
