Having a "slow" metabolism makes the quest to lose weight more difficult than it is for a person who has a "fast" metabolism, according to Dr. Joey Shulman DC, author and Registered Nutritionist. She also notes that scientific study has demonstrated that metabolism can be boosted naturally in a variety of ways.

Adjust Your Diet

In her book "Master Your Metabolism," Jillian Michaels suggests three steps to accelerating your metabolism naturally. The first is to remove toxins and anti-nutrients, which slow down your metabolism, from your diet. These include foods that contain refined grains, hydrogenated fats, high-fructose corn syrup, artificial preservatives, artificial sweeteners and glutamates. Secondly, she recommends adding "fat-burning hormone foods," such as beans and peas, leeks and onions, nuts and seeds, colorful vegetables and fruits, as well as dark green leafy vegetables. Thirdly, she suggests rebalancing your hormones by eating regularly, sleeping and exercising.

Exercise

Exercise is one of the most effective ways to boost your metabolism naturally. In her August 1983 New York Times Personal Health column, Jane Brody, writes that exercise helps to boost metabolism by optimizing the way in which your body uses up the calories that you ingest. She cites Dr. Martin Katahn, a Vanderbilt University psychologist, who reports that being reasonably active boosts your metabolism, making it far more effective than a low-calorie diet in losing weight. Boosting your metabolism through exercise is recommended if you are trying to shed a few extra pounds.

Green Tea

You can also increase metabolism using green tea. A report by the World's Healthiest Foods recommends drinking green tea to boost metabolism naturally. Green tea helps to promote the loss of visceral fat, which usually accumulates in the cell tissue that lines the abdominal cavity and surrounds internal organ such as the intestines. It contains compounds such as theanine, caffeine, and catechins that promote fat loss.

Eat More Protein

According to Dr. Shulman, eating more protein is another natural way to boost your metabolism. The metabolic process involves the transportation of molecules to various parts of the body, and this process is facilitated by an appropriate balance of protein compounds called amino acids. Dietary protein triggers the release of glucagon, a hormone that helps to boost metabolism. Glucagon promotes the body's use of fat by signaling to fat cells in the body to release that fat into the bloodstream to be used by the body.
