Hair Thinning Tips

Thinning hair may cause feelings of negative self-worth and low self-esteem in people. Thinning hair affects both men and women, and the cause is genetic in 90 percent of cases. However hair loss may also indicate a thyroid disorder, according to endocrinologist Dr. Emilia Liao. In a small number of cases, thinning hair can be triggered by stress or nutritional deficiencies. Whatever the reason for your thinning hair, medical science offers ways to treat, delay and, in some instances, prevent thinning hair.

Treatment Options

If you suffer from thinning hair, you have undoubtedly noticed all the advertisements for miracle hair loss "cures" and "treatments." It pays to be skeptical as most of these "cures" have little or no impact of thinning hair. The American Hair Loss Association points out that the Food and Drug Administration has approved only two medications for the treatment of hair loss. Finasteride, known by the brand names Proscar and Propecia, and minoxidil, known by the brand names Ioniten and Rogaine, are the only clinically-proven medications successful at treating hair loss.

Diet

Your hair consists mostly of the protein keratin, but many vitamins, such as biotin and inositol, and nutrients, like silicon and zinc, support the growth of thick, healthy hair. Maintaining a balanced diet of vegetables, fruits, lean meats and whole grains will supply much of the nutrition your hair needs. Taking a basic multivitamin can compensate for any unusual nutrient deficiencies.

Stress Management

Excessive stress can retard the hair growth cycle, warns Karen Marie Shelton of HairBoutique.com. Stress comes in a variety of forms, including sleep deprivation, worry and anxiety, illness and long working hours, and it contributes to thinning hair. Try to get a full 6 to 8 hours of sleep each night, and find ways to reduce other forms of stress. Take a yoga class or practice meditation techniques. Take some time off work, go for a daily walk, or do whatever helps you to feel more relaxed.

Hair Care

Hair cannot repair itself because once it leaves the hair follicle, it is dead. Treat the hair you have gently. Avoid using harsh chemicals, dyes or heat on your hair. If you must use a hair dryer, turn it to the lowest heat setting possible. Style your hair with a wide tooth comb or your fingers instead of a brush that can pull and break the strands. Avoid tight ponytails, braids or cornrows that may damage your already fragile hair.
