Active Ingredients

Olay's Definity Color Reacpture Moisturizer contains three active ingredients: octisalate, octocrylene and avobenzone. These ingredients are sunscreens that prevent ultraviolet A, or UVA, rays from reaching and damaging the skin, according to "A Consumer's Dictionary of Cosmetic Ingredients."

Vitamins and Amino Acids

Panthenol, or vitamin B3, tocopheryl acetate, or vitamin E, and niacinamide, or vitamin B3, all impart nutrients into the skin. Acetyl glucosamine is an amino acid proven to reduce hyperpigmentation of the skin, as found in a 2007 study published in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology.

Moisturizers

Definity Color Recapture has seven moisturizers to soften the skin. Water adds moisture immediately. Glycerin draws moisture from the air to the skin. Dimethicone and dimethiconol are silicone-based moisturizers. Isopropyl lauroyl sacosinate is an emollient, soothing the skin while providing moisture. Polyacrylamide dries on the skin, forming a thin protective coating. It also combines with sunscreen to make it waterproof. PEG-4, or polyethylene glycol, is a humectant, drawing moisture to the skin.

Emulsifiers

Emulsifiers are ingredients that help nonblendable substances mix. Olay's product contains 11 emulsifiers that also work as emollients for added moisturizing benefits, as outlined in "Milady's Skin Care and Cosmetic Ingredients Dictionary." These substances include benzyl alcohol, carbomer, behenyl alcohol, cetearyl glucoside, stearyl alcohol, laureth-7, cetyl alcohol, PEG-100 stearate, cetearyl alcohol, PEG-4 laurate and PEG-4 dilaurate

Preservatives

The four preservatives in Olay Definity keep harmful microorganisms from forming in the product, improving its shelf life. Methylparaben, propylparaben and ethylparaben have antimicrobial, antifungal and antibacterial properties, as stated by "Milady's Skin Care and Cosmetic Ingredients Dictionary." Idopropynyl butylcarbamate is a substance derived from iodine and used as a preservative in Olay Definity.

Other Ingredients

Stabilizers work to keep the blend of chemicals together and maintain the texture of the product. Olay Definity uses ammonium polyacrylate as a stabilizer. It also contains triethanolamine to adjust the pH level of the product to reduce irritation. The chemical C13-15 isoparaffin is used to thicken the product and provide a creamy texture. Titanium dioxide, a sunscreen and pigment, is used in Olay Definity to add color and added sun protection; it gives the product it's white color. Iron oxides tint the product's coloring slightly to provide a boost to the skin's natural coloring, according to "Personal Care Formulas."
