Atlantic City, New Jersey, home of the world famous Boardwalk and once the home of the Miss America Pageant, is one of the most visited resort cities in the country. Atlantic City has miles of coastline beaches where visitors and locals partake in various activities. The Atlantic City beach is ideal for great outdoors activity during the day and sits only steps away from exciting nightlife.
Run
Atlantic City's beaches are open from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. everyday. Because they are fairly wide beaches runners have the opportunity to run along the tightly packed sand on the waters edge or the loose sand closer to the boardwalk. Running in the loose sand requires more effort and provides a good leg and cardio workout.
Volleyball
Stroll up and down the Atlantic City Boardwalk and you will find a beach volleyball game taking place somewhere. One of the city's hotels/casinos typically organizes a beach volleyball game, but anyone can bring a volleyball net and start a game on the beach. The best beach areas for this sit away from the crowded casino strip and closer to the city's inlet area just beyond the Showboat Hotel and Casino.
Parade
Atlantic City holds an annual summer solstice parade. The parade is held as close to June 21 as possible. The summer solstice parade takes place on the famed A.C. Boardwalk and encourages active participation from spectators. The parade features body painting, cyclists, floats, a movie on the beach and live entertainment.
Body boarding
The Atlantic City beach has some very good waves later in the summer that are perfect for body boarding. There is a risk to this. Not all Atlantic City areas have lifeguards so you could be on your own. Enter the water in an open area and not near a pier. The current can carry surfers and swimmers under the pier.
General activities
The area close to the ocean's edge makes the perfect spot to build a sandcastle. The tightly packed sand holds together well and shapes easily with buckets, shovels or the hand. Carrying heavy buckets of sand across the beach provides a good workout at any age. A casual football game on Atlantic City's beach makes for a great workout and throwing the ball into the water allows for a quick cool, break. Atlantic City's beaches combine the best of tightly packed sand and loose sand, so play on the loose sand for a harder game and better workout.
Tips
Atlantic City resides on the east coast, so the sun rises along the beach. Get there early and the beach will be virtually empty, but by midday it's fully packed. Avoid the beach near the casinos. Lean toward the beach in the city's inlet area where there are fewer tourists and more locals.
