The manufacturers of Thermashine shampoo, Sunsilk, boast that their product "sleekifies" hair, providing it with shine. It contains silk proteins that, when combined with heat, may add shine to your hair. Sunsilk's Thermashine shampoo contains 25 ingredients.
Detergents
Sunsilk's Thermashine Shampoo contains five ingredients specifically designed to clean hair. The first cleansing product listed is sodium laureth sulfate, a surfactant that has foaming properties and makes shampoo lather up. The shampoo also contains cocamidopropyl betaine, a detergent made from chemically modified coconut oil. Sunsilk's Thermashine shampoo also lists tetrasodium EDTA as an ingredient. Tetrasodium EDTA, or thylenediaminetetraacetic acid, binds to metal ions that build up on the hair. It allows the detergents to wash away buildup. Thermashine also contains tea-dodecylbenzenesulfonate, a detergent and emulsifying agent.
Moisturizers
In addition to ingredients that clean the hair, Thermashine shampoo contains ingredients to add moisture to the hair. Glycerin draws moisture to the hair from deep within the hair follicles. There are two silicone-based moisturizers in Thermashine shampoo--dimethiconol and amodimethicone. These products are emollients that coat the hair shaft, hiding breaks and imperfections to give the hair a healthy shine. PEG-45m is a humectant that draws moisture from the environment to the hair. Guar hydroxypropyltrimonium chloride is derived from guar gum and is a conditioning agent meant to give hair a soft, sleek appearance.
Emulsifiers
Emulsifiers blend together two substances that would not ordinarily mix without chemical interference. Thermashine has three emulsifiers in its formula. Carbomer is a fatty substance used as an emulsifier. C11-15 pareth-7 is a synthetic chemical made from petroleum and ethylene oxide. Laureth-9 is a chemical mixture of the fatty acid lauric acid and ethylene oxide.
Preservatives
Preservatives ensure the shampoo has a long shelf life. Sunsilk includes three preservatives in their Thermashine shampoo. DMDM hydantoin is an antimicrobial preservative made from formaldehyde. This product also has cleaning and clarifying properties. Methylchloroisothiazolinone and methylisothiazolinone are anti-microbial, anti-bacterial and anti-fungal preservatives.
Silk
There are two silk-based ingredients in Sunsilk's Thermashine shampoo: silk powder, or the powdered remains of silk proteins, and silk amino acids. Silk powder is a strengthener, used to add to the hair's natural strength. It is also a humectant. The silk amino acids used in Thermashine shampoo are lysine and arginine. These work as protectants, strengtheners and humectants. These products also give hair a shiny appearance.
Other Ingredients
Thermashine includes water and salt, or sodium chloride, as ingredients as well as a fragrance. Borosilicate and silica are two mineral-based pigments that add opacity and shine to the shampoo. Titanium dioxide is a white opaque pigment that also functions as a sun screen and heat shield. Ext. violet 2 is a synthetic purple coloring pigment. Ppg-9 is an antistatic agent, meant to keep hair follicles from sticking together to provide a fuller, more voluminous appearance.
