Clairol's Herbal Essences line of products has a shampoo for every hair type. Their solution to oily hair is "Drama Clean," a refreshing and clarifying shampoo designed to remove excess oil from the hair and scalp. Those visiting the manufacturer's website rated this shampoo 4.3 on a 5 point scale. Herbal Essences shampoo for oily hair contains 23 ingredients.

Detergents

Herbal Essences shampoo for oily hair contains seven detergents designed to remove oils and debris from hair. Sodium laureth sulfate and sodium lauryl sulfate are included in this shampoo. These chemicals are surfectants with foaming properties that make the shampoo lather up. Tetrasodium EDTA, also known as thylenediaminetetraacetic acid, also is included in this shampoo. It binds to metal that builds up on the hair from the environment, allowing the other detergents to remove them quickly and easily. Cocamidopropyl betaine is a chemical detergent derived from coconut oil. Citric acid tones and clarifies the hair, removing oil. Sodium citrate is a chelating agent, designed to remove heavy metals from the hair, according to "Cosmetics Unmasked." Sodium xylenesulfonate is a synthetic compound and surfectant.

Extracts

Herbal essences "Drama Clean" refreshing shampoo contains three extracts: Camellia sinensis leaf extract, or tea, is used to tone and clarify the hair follicles. The shampoo also contains fruit juice from Frangaria ananassa, or the strawberry. This juice contains malic acid, which strips out excess oil from the hair. The shampoo also contains an extract from the citrus aurantium dulcis flower, or orange flower. This contains citric acid, which lends a sleek, shiny appearance to the hair. These extracts also add scent to the product.

Emulsifiers and Preservatives

Emulsifiers bind together two substances that wouldn't normally mix, like oil and water. Herbal essences "Drama Clean" shampoo for oily hair has one emulsifier, cocamide mea. Derived from coconut oil, this substance keeps the components of the shampoo from separating. There are three preservatives in this Herbal Essences shampoo: sodium benzoate, methylchloroisothiazolinone and
methylisothiazolinone. Methylchloroisothiazolinone and methylisothiazolinone have antibacterial, antifungal and antimicrobial properties that extend the shelf life of the shampoo, as outlined by "A Consumer's Dictionary of Cosmetic Ingredients."

Moisturizers

There are two moisturizers in this shampoo to give hair a supple shine after removing buildup. Guar hydroxypropyltrimonium chloride is a conditioner made from guar gum. Propylene glycol coats the hair follicles and keeps them from stitcking together, giving a full, healthy appearance to hair.

Other Ingredients

"Drama Clean" clarifying shampoo also contains water, salt (or sodium chloride), and a non-specific listing for fragrance. The shampoo makes use of linoleamidopropyl pg-dimonium chloride phosphate, an antistatic agent that keeps hair follicles separated and adds volume. The product is colored a light green using FD&C dyes yellow 10 and blue 1.
