Alpha-lipoic acid is an antioxidant found in the cells of the human body, where it helps turn glucose into energy. This fatty acid has many benefits, including fighting free radicals, protection for your eyes from degeneration and detoxification of toxins from the liver. There are rarely any side effects when taking alpha-lipoic acid in moderate amounts, including 200mg to 400mg a day. But taking more than this can result in some side effects.

Gastrointestinal Symptoms

Some people have experienced gastrointestinal symptoms after taking alpha-lipoic acid, including upset stomach abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. This typically occurs when taking doses higher than the recommended 200mg per day.

Allergic Reactions

In certain people, alpha-lipoic acid has produced allergic reactions of the skin, including rashes, hives and itching.

Drug Interactions

According to the Linus Pauling Institute, alpha-lipoic acid supplementation improves insulin-mediated glucose utilization. Because of this, alpha-lipoic acid can increase the risk of hypoglycemia in patients with diabetes who are using insulin or oral antidiabetic agents. Blood glucose levels should be monitored closely when taking alpha-lipoic acid.

Nutrient Interactions

There is some evidence that alpha-lipoic acid can compete with biotin (vitamin H) for transport across cell membranes, according to the Linus Pauling Institute. Despite this, there has not been enough research to indicate whether using alpha-lipoic acid increases the requirement for biotin in humans.

Thyroid Hormone Reduction

According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, alpha-lipoic acid can lower levels of thyroid hormone. Because of this, blood hormone levels and the function of the thyroid should be monitored closely when taking alpha-lipoic acid.
