Stall Your Menstrual Cycle

OVERVIEW
The timing of the menstrual cycle is controlled by a complex and synergistic balance of hormones, especially estrogen and progesterone. A "regular" menstrual cycle, in which the periods occur monthly, is a sign of healthy hormonal balance. When periods become too frequent, too infrequent or otherwise irregular, it is appropriate to use herbs and supplements to regulate the cycle. Attempts to alter the menses for personal convenience are unhealthy and inappropriate.

SIGNIFICANCE
Some women attempt to change the rhythm of their menstrual cycle to fit their schedules, such as for a vacation or an important event. While it is possible to override the body's rhythms with prescription hormones, and possibly alter the timing of the period by a day or two with large doses of hormonal herbs, the wisdom of doing so is questionable.

CONSIDERATIONS
Periods that are too frequent are a sign of hormonal imbalance; excessive blood loss can lead to anemia and exhaustion and should be treated. Periods that are too infrequent also signal a hormonal imbalance. They increase the risk of osteoporosis later in life and should be treated. Monthly and regular periods are a sign of hormonal balance and should be respected, not interfered with.

SOLUTION
If menses are regular, use a calendar and plan ahead. If periods are irregular, see a physician to see if a thyroid or hormonal balance is present, or if uterine fibroids are causing abnormal bleeding. The herb Vitex (Chaste Tree Berry) is often effective in normalizing menstrual cycles. The herb cinnamon often controls excessive bleeding.

WARNING
The use of birth-control pills for the sole purpose of altering the timing of menses is unwise and can lead to hormonal imbalances and side effects.

EXPERT INSIGHT
The period begins as the progesterone level declines. Vitex helps the body normalize its own progesterone levels without pharmaceutically overpowering the body's hormones as birth control pills do. Large doses of Vitex in the last half of the menstrual cycle may delay the start of the period by several days.
