Families are complex organizations that depend upon the collective cooperation of all its members in order to thrive. Unfortunately, this is not always possible. Families are made up of individuals with varying personalities, needs and desires. As a result, occasional family conflict is inevitable. Conflict in families can occur for a variety of reasons. If ignored, these conflicts can potentially have severe consequences for individual family members and for the family as a whole.
Marital Conflict
The relationship between husband and wife forms the foundation of every family. Married couples who constantly argue create an aura of hostility that permeates the home. When children pick up on these negative vibes they may become anxious, uneasy and begin to act out. Some couples who cannot resolve their differences ultimately get a divorce. Divorce can be devastating to children. A child's inability to cope with their parent's separation is a common source of family conflict.
Child Behavior Problems
While every child goes through phases where they exhibit less than perfect behavior, extreme behavioral problems can be a significant source of stress and conflict in families. Child behavioral problems can result from a variety of triggers depending on the child's age. While families with toddler-aged children may be subject to the wrath of the terrible twos, other families may be struggling through the turbulent teen years. Children experiencing academic or social problems at school and those suffering from learning disorders, attention-deficit disorder, depression or bipolar disorder may exhibit unusually aggressive or reclusive behavior.
Sickness
Not all family conflicts are the result of disagreements. Events like sickness and loss can take a toll on an entire family. If a parent has a serious illness, young children may feel afraid and helpless. Older children may become overwhelmed with worry and incur increased responsibilities. If a child has a serious illness, the parents must handle a host of emotional and financial hardships that can lead to sadness and stress. Conflicts may also arise among families faced with caring for elderly parents or grandparents.
Effects
Conflict can affect the members of a family in many ways and if not resolved, can lead to anger and depression. In some cases, it can completely sever the close bond that families share. While some families ultimately cope well with divorce, other families may never fully heal. Severe child behavior problems can place a strain on the relationship between the child and one or more of their parents. Families who cannot communicate and resolve their differences may begin to blame and resent one another.
Solution
In every family, some degree of conflict is inevitable. However, these conflicts do not have to destroy the family as a whole. Communicating and working through conflicts is the best way to get past them. Families that have a hard time communicating with one another may consider enlisting the help of a family counselor. Professional counselors can help families to discover the root of their conflicts and to find an effective solution.
