If your hair has been exposed to wind, sun, chlorine from a swimming pool, styling products, blow drying, straightening, perming or coloring chemicals, your hair may be damaged. Hair that is damaged may feel dry, like straw, and may get tangled more easily than healthy hair. You can restore your hair's shine and body with at-home treatments and home remedies. If your hair is severely damaged, see a professional stylist.
Wash Less Frequently
Washing hair every day will dry it out, stripping your hair of its natural oils. Instead, wash your hair every few days at the most. If you must wash your hair every day, wash it using conditioner first, says Arsen Gurgov, hairstylist at Louis Licari salon in New York City. Apply conditioner to just the ends of your hair, and leave it in for several minutes. Then, apply shampoo only to the roots of your hair and rinse as usual. Washing your hair this way will help your hair maintain its natural oils, even if you shampoo every day.
Add Oil
If your hair is damaged and dry, you may need to add oil to maintain shine and body. Apply a hair oil, available over the counter at drug stores or beauty supply stores, to sections of dry hair, recommends health and beauty website, WholeLiving.com. Add more oil to the most damaged areas, then blow dry your hair to lock in the moisture. Using a towel, carefully dab away any excess oil. Leave the oil on your hair for 20 minutes, up to several hours. For the strongest deep-conditioning treatment, cover your hair in a shower cap and sleep with the oil in your hair. The next morning, apply shampoo to your dry hair, lather and rinse. Finally, apply a conditioner to your hair, rinse and style as you normally would.
Silicone Products
Use a silicone serum or spray to protect hair against heat damage, recommends an article in "Harper's Bazaar." Silicone sprays and serums help seal the hair cuticles, making them less susceptible to damage. Additionally, silicone will also make hair look shinier. Too much silicone serum can make hair look greasy and limp. If you have thin hair, spray only a very light coating of silicone on your hair, avoiding the roots.
