Snowboarders face a number of challenges when it comes to choosing appropriate riding apparel. Snowboard clothing must be lightweight and flexible enough to allow freedom of movement, while also keeping the rider warm and dry. Fortunately, manufacturers use a variety of fabrics to create snowboard clothing that meets the needs of every rider.
Fabric for Wicking Layer
The wicking layer of a snowboarder's clothing includes the layer of fabric closest to the skin, often known as a thermal or base layer. The fabric used for this layer must be breathable enough for sweat to pass through, which helps keep moisture away from the body. This keeps the rider dry and enables him to maintain a stable body temperature. Ski Sun Valley recommends wicking layers include synthetic fabrics like polyester, or naturally-breathable fabrics like silk. According to Dicks Sporting Goods, polypropylene wicking layers offer an alternative for riders with sensitive skin. Because cotton tends to absorb moisture, it is not recommended for use as a wicking layer.
Fabric for Insulating Layers
Insulating layers are worn over the wicking layer, and are designed to keep the rider as warm as possible without adding excess weight or bulk that may restrict movement. According to Dicks Sporting Goods, the best insulating fabrics are ones that trap air between their fibers to keep body heat in and cold air out. Fleece, including brands like "Polar Fleece," are among the most popular fabrics for snowboarders. Manufacturers also use a synthetic fleece called "pile," which is denser than traditional fleece clothing. Wool is another popular option but may be too bulky or heavy for some riders and should be chosen with care.
Fabric for Outer Layers
The outer layer of clothing, or "shell," is what most people think of when considering snowboard clothing. This includes coats or jackets along with pants or bib overalls that help keep the rider dry. The best fabrics for outer layers are those that repel water, snow, rain and wind, yet are breathable enough to allow sweat to escape. Many are tightly woven and are treated with a laminated coating to enhance water-resistance. Manufacturers rely on a number of highly advanced fabrics when making clothing for snowboarders. The brand "Gore-Tex" is one of the most well-known and consists of a laminated synthetic fabric with very tiny holes that allow sweat to escape while keeping rain and snow out. Other brands use Gore-Tex alternatives that are often more affordable, but may not be as advanced as Gore-Tex in terms of water-resistance and breathability.
