The term "aromatherapy" is a relatively new word created in the 20th century to define the ancient Chinese practice that was used to enhance well-being. The use of volatile plant extracts and essential oils to stimulate the senses, also has strong Egyptian roots. Ancient Egyptians infused oils of clove, cinnamon and cedarwood, for spiritual and medicinal purposes. Today, aromatherapy treatments are on the menu at most day spas and holistic health establishments.

Stress Relief

In today's modern fast-paced society, anxiety, stress and tension are unfortunately, too often a part of our every day lives. One of the benefits of aromatherapy is the relief of of these symptoms. Essential oils made from lavender and chamomile are purported to have an calming effect on the senses. A massage using these oils can help relax tense neck and back muscles. If you are having a problem relaxing enough to fall asleep, try combining a bit of lavender and chamomile oil, and massage it into your muscles just before bedtime to get a good night's sleep.

Boost the Immune System

Stress can have a negative impact on our immune system. In addition to stress, psychological issues such as depression, can also suppress our bodies natural ability to ward off disease. Aromatherapists utilize various essential oils to address the whole person, both physically and psychologically. Eucalyptus, citronella and lemon oils are believed to have a sedative effect on the central nervous system. This effect relaxes and calms the entire person, addressing the senses at the cellular level. Aromatherapists believe that essential oils restore your body to a state of balance and well being. It is at this level, that your body can heal itself.

Mood Enhancement

When scents are inhaled, the smell or scent travels through your nose, across nerve centers and into the Limbic system, also known as 'the emotional brain', or the part of your brain that controls your mood. When the Limbic System is stimulated, endorphins, as well as other feel-good chemicals, are released into your blood stream. Essential oils can have a positive effect on your neurotransmitters, leaving you in a state of calm and an uplifted mood, according to research at the University of Minnesota.
